EXCLUSIVE: Sony Pictures Classics has made a U.S. rights deal on Toni Erdmann, the Maren Ade-directed German language film that is in the Palme d’Or competition here at Cannes and has gotten arguably the best reviews of any film at the festival so far. The bittersweet comedy stars Peter Simonischek and Sandra Huller, and revolves around an older man who begins to play pranks on his adult daughter after finding her too self-serious.
This becomes the second deal on the ground here for a competition title for Michael Barker and Tom Bernard’s prestige division, after they acquired the Paul Verhoeven-directed drama Elle, which stars Isabelle Huppert. Here is a trailer for Toni Erdmann:
